Automatic control system for variable rate application

Abstract

A manual flow control system for variable rate application was tested in the laboratory for performance evaluation. It could vary the flow rate in the range of 1:10 with no pressure control and 1:8 at a constant pressure (30 psi), with no significant change in the spray pattern. But the efficiency of field application depended on the operator's judgement. Based on the same concept of flow control, an automatic controller was developed. The new controller used solenoid valves controlled by 16-bit CPU, 16 MHz controller. It took the weed density data from a vision system and modulated the spray accordingly. The flow rate and spray pattern performances were same as that of the manual control system. But the automatic controller is expected to save more herbicide since it is more precise and accurate.
