Atomic vapor-based high efficiency photon detectors

Abstract

We describe a detector for weak optical fields employing an atomic vapor as the active medium, combined with the "cycling transition" readout perfected for ion traps. Theoretical calculations suggest detection efficiency >99% may be attainable.
