Abstract

One possible origin of the anomalous thermal expansion of Al//2O//3-15 vol% (Zr//0//. //5Hf//0//. //5)O//2 - diffusional phase separation on heating to a ZrO//2-rich t phase and a HfO//2-rich m phase - was investigated. STEM, EDS, and TEM techniques showed that virtually all particles were homogeneous and that such diffusional phase separation cannot explain the anomalous result.
