note = "Funding Information: When I joined the Medical College of Georgia in 1959, the institution did not have a Ph.D. program. It was my effort, with the support of other faculty members, that led to the development of the Ph.D. program at the institution. The program that I set up in my department was a Ph.D. program in Endocrinology. During my tenure, I awarded 11 MS and 25 Ph.D. degrees. In addition, I was involved in the training of 59 postdoctoral fellows. The training program was funded by an NIH training grant for 34 years. There were 24 other Ph.D. degrees awarded in the department under the mentorship of other faculty members. I was a member of the academic advisory committee of each of the other candidates as well and made sure that they had the resources for their research and presenting papers at scientific meetings. Overall, our trainees joined prestigious scientific institutions in the USA and around the world and have made an outstanding contribution to the progress of scientific research. Sixteen of our Ph.D. students received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Graduate Studies, a number that is close to about 50% of all awards from the Graduate School thus far.",
