Abstract

A hybrid process which incorporates adsorbents into membrane photobioreactor was developed in order to enhance recalcitrant compound removal from post-hydrothermal liquefaction wastewater. Preliminary results showed that the addition of granular activated (GAC) resulted in 90% COD and 60% nutrient removal compared to around 70% COD and 40% removal without activated carbon. There was still about 10% residual organics that were recalcitrant and non-absorbable by activated carbon. The addition of GAC also showed significant impact on the nitrogen behavior; the organic nitrogen and ammonia removal was greatly enhanced by the addition of GAC. Before the addition of GAC, organic nitrogen and ammonia were the majority of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN) in the effluent, but after GAC addition, nitrate was almost the only form of nitrogen in the effluent.
