Abstract

Alumina-aluminum interpenetrating-phase composites were developed with three-dimensional periodic architecture. The alumina tower with periodic cubic symmetry was produced by robotic deposition of an Al2O3-5 vol.% ZrO2 gel. The compressive strength of the composite was found to be greater than that of the un-infiltrated ceramic preform, with only a small increase in density.
