Abstract

This paper reports an initial system design for a scaleable all-diode-pumped master oscillator power amplifier (MOPA) water vapor DIAL system operating in the 940-nm water vapor band. The overall design is similar to an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) and relies extensively on existing technology developed for EDFAs. The master oscillator consists of a novel three element distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) laser. Devices at 1.006 μm fabricated in the same semiconductor material system have demonstrated tuning ranges >8 nm with >20 mW of power and <100 kHz linewidths. Initial results on similar devices fabricated approx.940 nm are presented.
