AIPS++ Applications in the Commissioning and Operation of the Green Bank Telescope

Abstract

The NRAO Green Bank Telescope (GBT) is a 100-meter single dish radio telescope designed to operate at frequencies from 300 MHz to 100 GHz. The GBT includes a number of advancements in telescope design including an unblocked aperture, active surface, laser metrology system, low-noise receivers, and state of the art continuum and spectral line backends. Commissioning is proceeding from lower to higher observing frequencies. Spectral line and continuum commissioning allowing for observations up to 50 GHz are scheduled for completion by April 2002. Early science experiments have been scheduled and observed. AIPS++ provides a versatile environment for software development and data analysis, and is integral to many aspects of GBT use including the observer's interface, technical analysis of engineering data, and reduction of scientific data. We present an overview of several AIPS++ applications used during commissioning the GBT, and present early results of the commissioning process. We include a description of the Interim Automated Reduction and Display System (IARDS), which is the AIPS++ application for quasi-real time display of continuum and spectral line data. The IARDS includes a pipeline for reduction of scientific data and provides graphical and operational feedback specific to the procedure being run.
