Abstract
This paper analyzes the feasibility of using an expert system for designing fixtures for workpieces which have to be machined on milling centers. Given the raw workpiece description (as might be obtained from a CAD data base), the machine description and the list of operations to be performed on the workpieces, it is possible, making use of knowledge of the operations, to generate and evaluate various fixture designs. The structure of an expert system is particularly useful in such a problem because it allows for addition of rules (knowledge) as more about the functioning of the system comes to be known.
