Aging relief systems - Are they working properly?

Research output: Contribution to specialist publicationArticle

Abstract

Several measures that are to be considered to address the common types of relief system problems are discussed. The most common relief system deficiencies can be classified into three classes that include no relief device or undersized relief device present on equipment with one or more potential overpressure scenarios and improperly installed pressure relief device. There are various solutions for each type of relief system problem that can be classified as modification of existing relief system components, replacement of existing relief system components, installation of new relief system components, or increasing the reliability of the emergency shutdown systems. The modification of existing relief-system components includes changes made to installed components, without requiring their replacement. The replacement of existing relief system components involves substituting inadequate relief system elements for newer, appropriate ones.
