Abstract

Maintaining safety and supporting aging in place are essential components of older adults’ quality of life and well-being. Advancements in technology provide new resources and tools to promote safety and enhance older adults’ ability to age in place. In this chapter, we outline key safety concerns surrounding the process of aging in place. We identify classes of technologies that can help create a smart home environment and promote safety in the home. We describe the importance of personal consideration and conceptual frameworks that inform understanding of the adoption of technologies by older adults. We also provide a detailed guide to help identify areas wherein technology might support older adults along with helpful questions and tips to guide professionals in their discussions of technology application with older adults.
