Abstract
The Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (ABE@Illinois) celebrated its 100 years of anniversary in 2021. The department was originally named Farm Mechanics. It evolved into a comprehensive Agricultural and Biological Engineering academic department on a Land-Grant university campus. The department currently has B.S. programs in Agricultural and Biological Engineering (ABE) and Engineering Technology and Management for Agricultural Systems (ETMAS), M.S. programs in ABE and ETMAS, and a Ph.D. programme in ABE. In addition, the department also offers Professional Science Master's (PSM) degrees in ETMAS and Bioprocessing & Bioenergy and an online Master of Engineering (M.Eng) degree in Digital Agriculture. The department has taken integrated approaches to establish and pursue its four missions: teaching, research, extension, and economic development; all are aimed at achieving local relevance and global pre-eminence in powering and feeding the world sustainably and intelligently. This chapter describes the evolution of ABE@Illinois, highlighting its reactive and proactive plans and changes in its strategy, functions, programs, pedagogy, and curricula, emphasising its deliberate movements in response to the rapid developments in the agricultural/biological/biosystems/bioresource engineering fields in the past quarter century.
