A tentative route toward nanofluidics: Directed diffusion of small molecules embedded within adsorbed polymers

Abstract

A study on the directed diffusion of small molecules embedded within adsorbed polymers was presented. The dynamics of the complex system of polycation, quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) (QPVP) was analyzed. The QPVP was allowed to adsorb to freshly cleaved mica, whose surface in aqueous environment is negatively charged. By changing the ionic strength as a variable in adsorption condition, the structure of the QPVP layer was tuned from flat to swollen, and the resulting mobility of probe molecules within these layers was measured.
