Abstract

This document has been prepared as a guide to pollution prevention investment. It starts at the point that pollution prevention projects that are technically equivalent to current practice have already been identified. Hence, a financial comparison and justification for the investment is the only consideration. In the case of a small business, the justification may be needed to negotiate a loan at a bank. Conversely, if the company can fund the investment itself, justification is needed to compete for funds. The emphasis of this paper is on the basic analytical techniques needed to justify pollution prevention investments. The concentration is on weighing economic and financial aspects of the various project options instead of the technical factors. In order to receive funding, it is essential that the project successfully compete in the company's capital funding sequence or before the bank's loan committee.
