Abstract
In this paper, the new Grainger Electrical Machinery Laboratory now in operation at the University of Illinois will be described. The lab concept and facility will be discussed. The laboratory opened late in 1989, with the first machines in operation during Spring, 1990. The facility alone proved to be an attraction - enrollment is up almost 30% from just a year ago. Power laboratories can be a tool to catch the interest of students, without any sacrifice in power engineering instruction. The importance of laboratories in restoring power engineering excellence is well known. New facilities such as this one address many of the issues.
