A Conceptual Artist in Every School

Abstract

A Conceptual Artist in Every School is simultaneously a spectacular artistic gesture and an invisible pedagogical activity. It is both performative and conceptual in that the project is durational and relational (and therefore dynamic). The idea is simple, but the implementation requires the nuance of an artist and the diplomatic acumen of a critical pedagogue. For more than 25 years, I have been doing this type of work both in and out of schools, on the skirts of the art world and most recently as a scholar in the academy. A Conceptual Artist in Every School is a performative work of scholarship where individuals in schools (could be teachers, but this is not required) take on the posture of a conceptual artist within their school buildings. The end goal is not to create art about conceptual art but to be a certain kind of thinker in those particular educational spaces who behaves as a conceptual artist, first at school, but ultimately everywhere, all the time.
