The American Academy of Arts and Sciences, founded in 1780, is one of the oldest honorary societies in the nation. Election to the American Academy honors outstanding leadership and scholarship in a full range of disciplines and professions: mathematics, the physical and biological sciences, medicine, the social sciences and humanities, business, government, public affairs, and the arts. New members join the ranks of Albert Einstein, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Benjamin Franklin, George Washington and other influential Americans.
