Research Interests

During the last 15 years I have researched several aspects of Bioengineering, especially focused on biosensors technology, point-of-care diagnosis, and microfluidics. Some of my work includes the development of electrochemical and optical detection platforms in clinical diagnostics and food safety. In particular, I have extensive experience in analyzing low molecular weight analytes, developing multiplexed quantification platforms for human biomarkers, and in pathogens detection. I have been recognized internationally for this works in Europe and the United States through publications and collaborations.

In my current position at UIUC, I participate in several projects devoted to the detection of proteins and cells from human samples for sepsis stratification, and to the development of 2D and 3D microfluidic cartridges for point-of-care detection of viruses and bacteria from human samples. I supervise and manage the research over 10 people (graduate and undergraduate students) in the Stephens Family Clinical Research Institute (Carle Foundation Hospital) and in the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory (MNTL, UIUC).

Besides my expertise in biosensors technology, my knowledge extends to both the general theory and experimental applications of integrating microelectronics and chemistry. I am well versed in: nano-micro fabrication technologies (clean room), microfluidics, optics, impedance characterization, synthesis and selective functionalization of nanoparticles (semiconductors II-V, gold, magnetic, etc), surface chemistry, simulation of devices, gas sensors, porous silicon, MEMS, RF-MEMS, and silicon technology.
